Established in 2023, Digital Rights Advocacy (DRA) – Uganda emerged from a growing recognition of the critical importance of digital rights in shaping the future of Ugandan society. Our history is one of resilience, advocacy, and unwavering commitment to promoting and defending digital freedoms for all.

Inception and Founding:
DRA was born out of the collaboration and vision of passionate individuals committed to safeguarding digital rights in Uganda. Co-founders Musinguzi Daniel, a seasoned digital rights defender, and Mpumwire Eunice, a dedicated activist, recognized the urgent need to address threats to digital freedoms in the country. Their shared commitment to promoting a free and safe digital environment laid the foundation for DRA's inception.

Early Advocacy and Challenges
In the early days, DRA faced numerous challenges as it sought to establish itself as a leading voice for digital rights in Uganda. Government censorship, surveillance, and restrictive internet policies posed significant obstacles to our advocacy efforts. However, our team remained undeterred, leveraging grassroots activism, strategic partnerships, and innovative advocacy campaigns to raise awareness about digital rights issues and mobilize support for change.

Building Momentum
As DRA gained momentum, our advocacy efforts began to yield tangible results. Through targeted campaigns, policy analysis, and coalition building with civil society organizations, we successfully lobbied for the adoption of more inclusive and rights-respecting ICT policies. These early victories energized our team and solidified our reputation as a formidable force in the fight for digital freedoms.

Expanding Focus and Impact
Over the years, DRA expanded its focus to address a wide range of digital rights issues, including freedom of expression, digital security, privacy, artificial intelligence, and more. Our holistic approach to advocacy encompassed capacity building, research, legal support, and the establishment of resource centers to empower individuals and communities to defend their digital rights effectively.

Challenges and Resilience:
Despite our progress, DRA continued to face challenges, including ongoing threats of censorship, cyber-attacks, and harassment. However, our resilience and determination only strengthened our resolve to push forward and advocate tirelessly for digital freedoms.
